Facts About S.E.M.R.A. & Mountain Rescue In Ireland South East Mountain Rescue Ireland
  • All members are volunteers
  • Team members are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
  • MR can only be called out using 999/112.
  • We attend to between 15 and 20 callouts annually.
  • Approximate annual running costs for the S.E.M.R.A. - €35-40k. Approximately €10K of this is supplied by government. Shortfall made up from donations & fundraising.
  • Approximately 50 team members in S.E.M.R.A. Team members come from all walks of life including carpenters, engineers, scientists, doctors, shopkeepers, civil servants etc.
  • All members live the South East.
  • Mountain Rescue is free in Ireland.
  • Members receive no payment for mountain rescue.
  • Members receive no expenses for gear, petrol etc.
  • All team members have to provide most of their own personal equipment (Some personal equipment is provided).
  • Mountain Rescue work closely with other agencies such as the Gardai, Search & Rescue Dogs Association (SARDA), The Irish Coastguard etc
  • S.E.M.R.A. works closely with other teams, Dublin/ Wicklow, Glen of Imaal and Kerry MRT’s.
  • There are 12 mountain rescue teams in the country. All 12 teams are affiliated to IMRA. The Irish Mountain Rescue Association.
  • All Members are medically trained in the R.E.C. system (Rescue Emergency Care).
  • The most common injury is a lower leg injury.
